How to get your first Google review

Google reviews are one of the first things a customer sees when they search for a local business. Even a few honest reviews can make a real difference. Here is how to get started.

1. Ask in person, right after the job

The best time to ask is when the customer is happy — right after you finish the work. Say something simple: "If you were happy with the job, a Google review would really help me out." Most people are glad to help if you ask.

2. Make it easy

Don't expect customers to search for your listing on their own. Send them a direct link to your Google review page. You can find it in your Google Business Profile under "Ask for reviews." Text or email the link right after the job so they don't forget.

3. Never offer anything in exchange

Google's rules say you cannot offer a discount, a gift card or anything else in exchange for a review. You also cannot ask only your happy customers — that is called review gating, and Google can remove your reviews if they catch it. Ask everyone the same way.

4. Don't write reviews for yourself

Fake reviews are easy to spot, and Google removes them. Worse, they can get your listing suspended. One real review from a real customer is worth more than ten fake ones.

5. Reply to every review

When someone leaves a review, reply. A short "Thank you" is enough for a good one. For a bad one, stay calm, say you're sorry they had a bad experience, and offer to make it right. Other customers read the replies.

6. Be patient

Most small businesses get reviews slowly — a few a month is normal. Don't buy reviews or use a service that promises dozens overnight. Steady, real reviews build trust over time.
